How to Become a Follower of Jesus Christ

People have a lot of different ideas about what it means to be a Christian. Some believe they are Christians because they are a part of a particular denomination. And some think they can become a Christian by trying to live a good life and treat others fairly. Then there are those who would call themselves “Christian” because they’ve been baptized, either as an infant or at some point later in life.

While there are plenty of ideas floating around, there’s one place you can find truth about becoming a Christian. The Bible teaches us very clearly what it takes to follow Christ. Here are some important verses straight from Scripture that tell us what it means to “be a Christian.”

“For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God” - Romans 3:23

Sin means to miss the mark or target. Everyone is born with a sin nature. When our attitudes, actions, words, thoughts and intentions are sinful, they’re not pleasing to a Holy God.

“For the wages of sin is death” - Romans 6:23

Death entered human existence because of sin. It brought not only physical death, but spiritual death as well. Spiritual death means being separated from God, both while here on earth and after our physical lives are over.

“God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” - Romans 5:8

“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, and that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life” - John 3:16

God loves you, and He sent His Son, Jesus, to prove it! Far too many people have a misperception about who God is and what He has done for us. While it is true God must punish sin, He loved us so much that He sent Jesus Christ to take the punishment due for our sin, for YOUR SIN and MY SIN!

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - not of works, so that no one can boast” - Ephesians 2:8-9

A person becomes a Christian because of the wonderful love and grace of God. The good news is that we cannot earn it, and we certainly do not deserve it –we simply receive it!

So how do we receive it? The Bible tells us.

“If you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord', and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, YOU WILL BE SAVED. For it is with the heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.” - Romans 10:9-10

There it is:

  • agree with God that you have sinned
  • ask His forgiveness and be willing to repent (turn away from your sin) by confessing that Jesus is Lord and that He has forgiven you
  • believe in your heart that Jesus died on the cross, was buried and then three days later was raised to life claiming victory over death (spiritual separation from God) and sin
  • Taking these steps with a sincere heart will lead you into a relationship with God that will be defined by your trust in Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior, and by His forgiveness of your sin and teaching you how to continually know and love Him more deeply throughout your life.

If you would like to accept the grace gift of salvation and become a Christian, then pray this prayer:

“Lord Jesus, I admit I am a sinner. I know my sin separates me from you. I believe with all my heart that Jesus died and was buried and three days later was resurrected. I turn from my sin right now and turn to Jesus as my Savior. Jesus, I want you to take complete control of my life. Thank you for loving me and saving me so I may have an abundant life now and eternal life later in Heaven with you. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.”
